EFT to help with the grief of the loss of a beloved pet.

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, it seems my last posting was prescient insofar that when I went into work the next day, one of my work colleagues was visibly upset, and told me that her 10 month old kitten-cat was seriously ill
and at the vets having tests done.

Once again, there is interesting timing. Just a couple of days ago I read an article on EFT for grief and pet loss by Jan Luther, EFT Master on the EFT, MTT & Tapping Therapy Articles website.

It is a lovely article, and could prove very useful and supportive for anyone going through the grieving process following the loss of a beloved animal companion. For many of us, these little creatures are truly part of our family, and their loss is felt as keenly, and sometimes even more so than the loss of a human family member. In these cases, they are never just merely a "pet", and one of the most insensitive things that can be said to someone mourning the loss of their cat or dog, or whatever the pet was, is along the lines of "It was just a ______, so why all the fuss?"

Last week my colleague had told me the details of little Dylan's situation. He had started acting very strangely at the weekend, walking on tippy-toe and arching his back in obvious pain. At first the vet thought he might have been involved in a shunt with a car as his claws were a bit scrappy, but then they thought it more likely his kidneys were causing problems and weren't ruling out the possibility of some sort of toxic response.

My colleague was devastated - she lost a cat in similar circumstances just about a year ago, and has also had to have her dog put to sleep more recently, and was wondering why this was happening to her cats and no-one else's. She was awaiting results from the latest tests in the hopes it might shed more light on what was going on with poor little Dylan.

I suggested some Emotional Freedom Techniques stuff she could do for herself and for Dylan, including the 'tap and rant ' technique to get at all the anguish and fear and worry that she felt, and the pain that Dylan might be feeling. I also asked if she would like Reiki Distant Healing for them both. When she left she asked that I'd not forget to send healing. As she was telling me about it, I could feel the intensity of her emotion and let waves of Reiki flow to her, which seemed to help her somewhat. Once home, I added her details to the Distant Healing list on the Reiki Forum I am a member of. I also lit a candle each night on my altar, representing the Light of Healing and Love.

I saw her briefly again today before tomorrow's session and asked how things were. Sadly, she had to tell me that the little sweetheart had not responded to the treatments and had to be put to sleep on Thursday. Over the short time Dylan had been with her she had regaled me with details of his antics, as one cat-lover to another. He had sounded like a right little character and she said that she had spent a lot of time in tears over the last few days. Made me feel quite emotional as well, as we have our own three cats who we love intensely, so I know just how she feels. I think I'll do a bit of tapping on myself before I go to work tomorrow; empathy is all very well, but both of us getting emotional isn't a good idea in that particular setting.

As I read the article, I thought of my colleague and hoped that I wouldn't need to let her have a copy. Alas, such is not the case and I've said I'll take a print-out in for her tomorrow. Hopefully, it will help her through a difficult time and I'm more than willing to help her out should she so wish. EFT won't take away all the memories but it can remove the associated negative emotions surrounding the last few days, and thus bring a measure of peace, knowing that Dylan is no longer in pain, and who knows, waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.

Bright Blessings,

Karen
